Aircraft Automatic Direction Finding Test Equipment (ADF Testers / Simulators)

The Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) is a critical piece of Aircraft navigation equipment, used to automatically calculate the relative bearing of an aircraft to a radio station.

The ADF consists of a loop aerial which is rotated to detect the direction of minimum reception of a specific radio frequency, relative to the direction an aircraft flying is headed. This is combined with heading information for the aircraft compass to help the pilot understand bearing position and chart their course.

These are critical for tracking desired course, and the accuracy of a unit should be tested as part of every preflight routine. Aside from preflight checks for basic functionality, ADF equipment may need to be bench tested when undergoing repair or recalibration.

An ADF indicator often has a fixed azimuth dial, that shows information from the ADF unit. A coaxial connector is generally used to connect the ADF receivers and their antennas.

Our ADF Testers undergo quality assurance procedures and are calibrated by certified technicians using NIST-traceable standards.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

QUESTION: What is an ADF Tester/Simulator in aviation?

ANSWER: An ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) Tester/Simulator is a device used to test and calibrate ADF systems on aircraft

QUESTION: Why is it important to use an ADF Tester/Simulator in aviation maintenance?

ANSWER: Using an ADF Tester/Simulator ensures that the ADF equipment on an aircraft is functioning correctly and accurately

QUESTION: How does an ADF Tester/Simulator work?

ANSWER: An ADF Tester/Simulator generates simulated ADF signals that mimic those transmitted by ground-based ADF beacons

QUESTION: What are some common features of ADF Tester/Simulators?

ANSWER: Common features of ADF Tester/Simulators include the ability to simulate different ADF frequencies, signal strengths, and modulation types

QUESTION: How often should ADF systems be tested using an ADF Tester/Simulator?

ANSWER: ADF systems should be tested using an ADF Tester/Simulator as part of regular maintenance procedures, and whenever the system is suspected to be malfunctioning
